Hervey Bay enjoys a reputation of having some of the best whale watching in the world.
The Humpback whales visit the calm waters of Hervey Bay from mid July to early November.

Humpback whales are active, acrobatic whales. They can throw themselves completely out of the water, and swim on their backs with both flippers in the air. On most occasions they will interact with vessels and this enables visitors to get close up views of these giants of the ocean. They also engage in tail slapping pectoral flapping (using their flippers to slap the water). It is possible that these behaviors are a means of communication between humpbacks. Singing by Humpbacks can also be heard as most vessels have hydrophones that they immerse in the water. A fleet of vessels provide a selection of whale watching tours during the season and visitors can choose from either a dawn, morning, afternoon, three-quarter-day or full-day tours with informative commentary, marine interpretation, refreshments and lunch depending on the time of tours.
